Frequently Asked Questions

I don't have access to this repository, but I want to contribute ideas for how to best build an Upstream Engineering program, is this possible?

What is the difference between an open source contribution to a Public project and an Optum project?

  • Public Open Source projects are published and maintained by individuals, businesses or communities not affiliated with Optum. Optum publishes our own projects and hosts them for the benefit of the open source community here.

Which public open source communities are already approved for active contributions?

  • The approved communities list is here. Simply choose a project, ensure you have completed the required MyLearning course and get involved.

How do I get a new open source community approved for active contributions?

  • Follow the self-service process outlined here. Most submissions meeting the criteria are approved within two business days.

My open source contribution pull request was recently merged into the project, but it is not listed in the engineering contributions page. How is the page updated? Can I do it myself?

  • Yes, you can help us maintain the list of open source contributions. We appreciate your assistance! Please follow these instructions:
  1. ensure you register you public github.com username. If you have not, create a new issue with the upstream engineering repository Register Public GitHub Account
  2. ensure you have completed the required OSS Contribution MyLearning course and attested to compliance
  3. ensure the organization's repo you contributed to appears in the Approved Communities If not, please submit a pull request.
  4. extraneous circumstances may cause it to not appear (i.e. the PR appearing as Closed instead of Merged)
  5. the automated update process runs at least once a day, between 8:00 and 9:00 CST
