Upstream Engineering Overview

Flowdock

The purpose of this repository is to collectively develop, document and administer an Open Source Upstream Engineering program across Optum. Upstream Engineering is an effort to exert positive influences on those open source projects and organizations upon which Optum relies for continued software engineering success in the health care technology industry. You will find here a collection of resources that are intended to be helpful for individuals and teams seeking to participate and lead the Upstream Engineering program. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Upstream Engineering governance and process documentation.
  • Key open source projects targeted for Optum involvement.
  • Information on how the Upstream Engineering program is aligned with the Technical Leadership Career Path (TLCP).
  • Upstream Engineering FAQs

What is Upstream Engineering at Optum? 🤔

Optum has made great strides in the past few years identifying and contributing to both 3rd party open source projects as well as publishing original projects and learning to manage associated communities. The next stage in our maturity involves actively identifying and promoting open source contribution to those projects where we are or plan to make strategic investments on our key product and service roadmaps. As we become more involved with these open source projects, we not only build relationships and opportunities for positive influence benefitting Optum, we simultaneously invest in the development of our engineering community and their careers.

Who is responsible for Upstream Engineering leadership?

The Open Source Program Office (OSPO) is sponsoring the program and will coordinate activity, but a successful Upstream Engineering program needs to be designed by and for the engineering community. This repository and the associated flow are intended to serve as collaborative spaces to grow the program organically, from within the engineering community.
